The needle and the art done.
Tattoo Artist, Nguyen Dang Thien , says local Vietnamese are slowly dissolving the taboos and stereotypes associated with tattoos here by steering clear of themes often represented by prison and army tattoos and focusing instead on philosophy and personal passions.
Thien opened Saigon Ink, in District 10 last June. “Tattoo is an art. It has no limits,” he says. “Tatoos can express beauty and charm or they can also be simple good luck charms or religious symbols of spiritual value.”
After the Tet holiday, he plans to open a second shop located in HCMC’s backpacker area.
“My ambition is to develop a tattoo service and build an official tattoo career in Vietnam. I hope to help rub out the bias against tattooing so that an original Vietnamese tattoo culture can begin to take shape.”

Tattoo art: thrilling, but trembling.
In Hanoi, painter Nguyen Hai won a reputation for his skillfulness in tattooing splendid dragons ascending from knee to the scuff of the neck. Most of his customers are public servants and entrepreneurs. Traditionally, ascending dragons are the embodiment of prosperity and longevity.
Tattoo art requires many characteristics, the art painting aptitude of tattooists and the bravery of customers. Each masterpiece takes a long time of needling through skin painfully.
According to Hai, customers come from all walks of life. They bring their own messages to take the plunge into this kind of entertainment. Some keep the tattoos for themselves. Some want to show off their trendy style to catch peer admiration. Others hope to bring in the good and release the bad with their tattooed bodies.

HIV club becomes model help group.
Duong Thu Huong, like many other women in Viet Nam, has faced insurmountable difficulties since discovering she had contracted the deadly disease. In a country where suicides are not uncommon when a patient is diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, Huong has found hope in the Hoa xuong rong (Cactus Flower) Club.
"I was shocked and scared when I received the test results. My husband’s family blamed it all on me, and told everyone that I was a debauched wife. With no care and no money, I almost killed myself," said Huong in a recent interview.
The family eventually discovered that a man, with which Huong’s husband had shared a knife to tattoo themselves, had died from AIDS and was the likely culprit in spreading the disease.
Thanks to a suggestion from a relative in the healthcare profession, Huong joined the Cactus Flower Club a year ago, and now helps other families and individuals cope with HIV/AIDS. If a person is excommunicated by their relatives, the club will take them in, and care for them.

In the past, tattoos were the domain of men, who mostly made them with such simple tools as sewing needles, knives and Chinese ink. Now they are much more expensive and complicated. The only 'cheap' tattoo shops left are in the back alleys or in the spaces under Long Bien and Chuong Duong bridges.
