13-year-old gets body piercing without parent's consent.
A North Texas father wants a business shut down after the tattoo and piercing shop gave his eighth-grader a body piercing. What makes it worse, he said is that the worker knew he was just 13.
When Ethan Fitzgerald was asked why he wanted a tongue piercing he said, " I just thought it was cool and decided to get it done."
"My friends got their tongues pierced," he said.
On Saturday night, Ethan said those pierced friends walked him into a stall in the flea market section of La Gran Plaza in Fort Worth. "The only thing they asked me was how old I was, and I said I was 13, and then she was talking to my friends in Spanish and told me to sit down."
Ethan said he knew his father would be mad. He did not, however, anticipate him calling the police. Eric Fitzgerald met officers at the business. The officer wrote no citations, but the case has been reported to the Texas Department of State Health Services. A spokesman said penalties could range from a criminal misdemeanor to administrative fines and sanctions.

Former officer apologizes to wreck victim's family.
A former Texas City police officer who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a fatal wreck apologized to two dozen members of the victim’s family Tuesday.
“If I could trade places, I’d rather it be me,” John P. White said. “I’m sorry from the deepest part of my heart.”
White was off duty Jan. 18, 2008, and had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when his pickup truck hit the rear of Leticia Lynn Ortiz’s compact car.
White, whose blood alcohol level measured .17, testified he made the first liquor-store purchase of his life, a pint of Crown Royal, on the night of the wreck. He took the bottle to a tattoo artist’s house in League City. White had three drinks between 9 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. to dull the pain of a half-sleeve tattoo.
Ortiz worked at a Texas City nursing home and was making plans to marry her fiance the evening of her death.

Following the funny money trail.
The US Secret Service is helping Baytown police in searching for a man accused of passing hundreds of dollars in counterfeit money. Investigators say the phony bills are "the best they've seen."
About $800 in counterfeit cash was seized by Baytown police. Investigators are calling it one of the largest busts they've ever made. What's more, they say the fake currency belonged to just one man -- a local tattoo artist.
The suspect, who is not facing any charges, has since provided police with information which they hope will lead them to the brains of the entire operation.

Tattoo artist finds his calling.
Looking for a place to get a tattoo? Look no further than Dark Side of the Moon. There you will find Jorge Aguirre, a 26-year-old tattoo artist from Monterrey Mexico, whose designs are getting attention here and around the state.
Aguirre got his first job at Quetzalcoatl Tattoo Shop in Monterey in 2000. In 2001 he became a professional.
Since 2003, Aguirre has been at Dark Side of the Moon, 2227 Central Blvd. He averages 15 tattoos a week, the cheapest being $45, and the most expensive having no limit. The most he has ever charged for a single tattoo is $1,300.
Aguirre’s first moment of national recognition was when one of his designs was published in Flash magazine. He has had three other designs published in magazines such as Savage and Crave.
Aguirre hopes to one day be as good as Guy Aitchinson, who he said one of the best tattoo designers in the world. "I want to be like the famous guys, being next to a great artist is priceless," he said.

Body art industry under heavy regulation.
One in four Americans express their individuality this way – 40 million to be exact. No, it is not dyed hair. It is a tattoo. Tattoo seekers should do their homework before letting someone get up close and personal with their body.
If the tattoo artist is working out of his garage at the end of the street for free, chances are that tattoo may have freebies included that are not necessarily wanted – hepatitis for example. "Any form of hepatitis can live for up to six months. In this business, you often get what you pay for," said Kacie Looker-Locklear, owner of American Illustrators tattoo shop in Killeen.
Linda Timmerman, office manager at American Illustrators, said that instruments should not be opened until they are sitting in front of the customer. Timmerman added that instruments such as needles, ink caps, disposable razors and anything else that can be one-time use should be. "Needles cost cents. There is absolutely no reason to reuse a needle. No one should endanger the health of another person just to save a few cents.
Piercing instruments and jewelry should also be sterilized. "Only surgical stainless steel, solid 14-karat gold that is nickel-free or titanium jewelry is to be used to pierce," Locklear said.
Another growing trend in the body modification arena is permanent cosmetics – makeup is tattooed on. People can take a two-hour course and receive a certificate for permanent cosmetics. "They take these courses and set up shop in their living room or back bedroom," Locklear said.
"I'm not trying to scare anyone off. They just need to be careful and educate themselves to protect their body," Locklear said.

CLEAN ... NEAT ... MODEST.
Alto ISD released the dress code for the 2007-08 school year just in time for summer.
"I wanted everyone to get this going into summer so parents will know what type of clothing to buy their children over the summer," said Superintendent Dr. Ray DeSpain. "(This year's dress code) will be mostly the same as last year. There are a couple of clarifications, removing ambiguity."
Body piercing (nose, eyebrow, lip, tongue, or facial) is not allowed by any student.
Girls may wear earrings, but they shall not be questionable and/or disruptive in nature.
Excessive jewelry is not allowed. This is to include: chains on clothing or wallets; "grills" on teeth; spiked jewelry; multiple rings/bracelets; etc. that call attention to oneself or are disruptive in nature.
Tattoos must be covered at all times.
The dress code applies to all school events, on campus and off.

A Puncture of Taste: Piercing thrusts into popularity in the Valley.
Dani Powers, owner of Powers Tattoos and Body Piercing Studio in McAllen, said piercing is very popular these days. “You got the navel; you got the eyebrows, the tongue.” Powers said the industrial piercing — a metal bar across the cartilage of the ear — is also popular.
Piercer Josh Wheeler, 27, has numerous piercings on his face, including the ears, a bridge at the top of his nose between his eyebrows, and a labret of his own. Elaborate, colorful tattoos cover his arms and his scalp. Powers’ shop has five people on staff and offers tattooing, piercing and permanent cosmetics.
The shops walls are covered with images of tattoos from which customers can choose; shelves of barbells (for tongue piercings) jeweled curved barbells (for navel piercings); and labrets.

Tattoos affirm beliefs for Christian students.
Dr. Jerome Koch is an associate professor of sociology at Texas Tech University. His research includes a sample of Baylor students, as well as some from Purdue University, University of Notre Dame and Texas Tech University. Baylor was "unique" because almost half student tattoos are religious, compared to one-fourth at other schools.
Jeremy Robinson, a tattoo artist at Dream Connection in Waco, said he has drawn religious tattoos for all age groups. "People in general like to get a Jesus fish on the foot," he said. "That's a pretty popular one."
Before coming to Waco, Robinson worked in Killeen near Fort Hood. "Religious tattoos were really common over there," he said. Robinson attributed the popularity to the fact that many of the soldiers were heading to war. There were a lot of crosses, Bible verses and "In memory of..." designs, he said.
Alexandria, La., senior Alex Bolten has two religious tattoos. The first is a barcode on his left wrist. The "code" is actually Nov. 14, 2001, the date Bolten became a Christian. There is also a Scripture reference to 1 Corinthians 6:20, which reads, "You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." Bolten said he chose the barcode because it's on everything that's been purchased.
Denver sophomore Emily Hinkle got her first tattoo on April 9. The design on her wrist is a Scripture reference to Psalm 145. "It's a constant reminder of what's most important to me," she said. Hinkle said she chose that particular Psalm because it was "full of beautiful promises."

Texas tattoo shops feel the pinch in business.
North Texas tattoo shops say they've been feeling a pinch in their business ever since Oklahoma legalized tattooing last November.
A Different Drummer tattoo parlor found out 45 percent of their business came from the north of the Red River.
Robert Ulman has been tattooing for over five years. He says even though their shop is still busy it's not what it used to be a few years ago.
Another option for north Texas tattoo parlors is to open up shop in Oklahoma. Some already have and A Different Drummer says they plan to do so as well.

Hanging by a Moment: Locals hooking into body modification trends in the Valley.
Inserting large fish hooks into your body might not sound like the most pleasant or smartest thing to do. However many of the brave individuals who choose these diversions say it’s the most peaceful moment they have ever felt. People who choose to suspend are often looking for an adrenaline or endorphin rush, to conquer one’s fears or to reach a new level of spirituality, bmezine.com, the go-to body modification site states.
Public health and safety issues are a priority for all suspensions, said Dani Powers, owner of Powers Tattoo & Body Piercing in McAllen. Observers and performers are kept separate at all times for protection and sanitary purposes. Piercers have what they call a sterile zone to avoid cross contamination.
All piercing procedures are performed in controlled conditions, utilizing surgical grade sterilization products and techniques, according to paintribe.net, home of Atonement Body Arts, the group to which Rotten belongs. All implements are sterilized and must be kept that way until they are removed from the package. Surgical grade gloves are worn at all times by all ritual participants.
Unfortunately, accidents do happen, with the possibility of the skin ripping being the most common incident. There also is the possibility of a person going into shock or bleeding profusely, according to suspension.org.
Florida is the only state in the country where body suspension has been banned.

Local artist fuses tattoo art, pop art and graffiti.
Marcus Farris, 35, is legally blind, but can still see well enough to draw at close range, hasn’t let his condition slow him down. He is the head of art education at the University of Texas-Pan American; he said his subject matter ranges pretty freely according to his varying inclinations.
“For the past two years I’ve been getting my research background in underground and low brow and street art.” he said, “That kind of encompasses everything from turn-of-the-century printmakers to illustrators to the guys that do comic books.”
Farris’ style also has strong elements of tattoo art. Farris likes to work with tattoo flash art, the name for the pictures people see when they walk into a tattoo shop. This flash art on the wall gives customers a large selection to choose for their own tattoos. The tattoo artist breaks the image down into a line drawing, then colors it in.
“Professionally I’ve been working and selling for about 12 years now,” he said. “Like I said, it’s just kind of been a natural progression. I’ve always just kind of drawn and painted. I really didn’t get super-involved in a lot of stuff probably until right out of high school, in terms of focusing on art being a career, something other than a hobby.”

'Celebrated Skin: Tattoo Art & Artists from Austin.'
Exhibit shows tattoos' meaning more than just skin deep.
There was one thing Christina Hiett knew for sure before she set out to organize "Celebrated Skin," an exhibit of Austin tattoo art and artists. "I didn't want it to be a freak show or a peep show," says the 26-year-old independent curator.
Tattoos offer plenty of fodder for cultural critics. They contain the semiotics of today's popular culture yet have a tradition that spans centuries and continents, from punk kids in San Marcos to Samurai warriors of ancient Japan. Tattoos have their own specific and individual visual vocabulary that's a creative expression of both the tattoo artist and the tattoo bearer — a collaboration not found in most art forms, which require no relationship between creator and owner. Finally, tattoos have a certain shock value, but they can also be deeply personal or take residence on an intimate part of the body.

Getting Inked.
Local couple loving the business of body-art.
Mac and Jackie McDonald, owners of Over the Edge Tattoos and Body Piercing, at 1702 East Rusk St., are doing their part to keep the long tradition of body-art alive, and they strive to make self-decoration safe and fun.
“We started the business, strictly doing piercing, in 1995. We formally learned how to do piercing in Florida and then we opened our business here and we were the only people in East Texas period doing piercing,” said Jackie McDonald. “There were some tattoo shops in Tyler at the time, but no one was doing piercing back then — the closest place to get piercings was in Dallas. And then about two years into it, I started doing tattoos as well.”
The shop just hired tattoo artist Ricky McCann last month to work their second chair. Ricky has been doing tattoos for six-and-a-half years and recently moved to Jacksonville from Tampa Bay, Florida.

Ink for the soul.
Many tattoo fans attended the Slinging Ink Tattoo Expo on Saturday at the Airport Convention Center, where artists were creating images on arms, legs, feet, backs and chests.
Religious depictions were few among the vast array of images displayed in pictures and on bodies at the expo. "Often, people get religious tattoos to express outwardly what they feel inside," Houston artist Erik Del Rio said.
A Catholic parish religion teacher in San Antonio, had artist Jacob Reyes tattoo a dove with an olive branch on her right foot to symbolize a new beginning in life.
Reyes' left arm shows praying hands holding a rosary — a memorial to his grandfather, who died when Reyes was 6. The crucifix on the rosary bears his grandfather's initials.
Tattoos of an angel and the Blessed Virgin Mary compete with an image of the Grim Reaper on his shoulder and a demon face on his wrist, reflecting the competition between good and evil in his life. So he added still another tattoo — a dove to symbolize peace and God's influence in his life.
