South Carolina Tattoo And Body Piercing
News And Articles...

Beaufort, South Carolina

Some residents chafe at pending tattoo shop in Port Royal.

Clarissa Wills' shop, Beauty Marks Tattoo's, at S.C. 802 and Baynard Road, is scheduled to open sometime this summer.

Port Royal Planning Administrator Linda Bridges said Port Royal granted Wills a building permit for her new facility, but that she still must show proof of meeting state licensing requirements before the town will approve a business license.

Once granted, Bridges said Wills also must adhere to laws that limit business hours to 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; require off-street parking and a minimum of three parking spaces for each licensed artist; and cannot have neon signs.

Wills received her training as a tattoo apprentice in Tampa, Fla., about 11 years ago.

When she moved to Beaufort in 1999 with her husband, a former Marine stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Deporis Island, Wills began looking into opening a body piercing facility. In 2000, Wills opened Gothic Piercing on Ribaut Road. Wills closed the shop several years ago after her husband received a change of orders that later fell through.

Wills is proud to be among the first to introduce piercing and tattooing to the area.

Anderson, South Carolina

Tattooing takes off in Anderson.

A small, green building on East Shockley Ferry Road in Anderson, looks like a cross between a beauty parlor and a doctor’s office. But it’s not a building for either of those purposes. It’s Anderson County’s first legal tattoo parlor.

“We have to meet the same standards as a doctor’s office,” said the parlor’s owner, Steve Ricketts.

Aside from questions about the pain, the biggest misconception that Mr. Ricketts and his wife, Tina, also a tattoo artist, deal with is who gets tattoos and where they get them. He has tattooed just about every police officer in Elberton, and has tattooed a judge, lawyers and nurses.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Island tattoo parlor opens as first in county.

Studio One-Eleven, which opened last week in an unassuming building at 111 Arrow Road on Hilton Head Island, is the first tattoo parlor to open in the area since the decades-long ban was lifted on March 24.

Studio One-Eleven owners Stephen Clark, who handles the marketing side of the business, and Steve Cochran, the head artist, met through Craigslist, an online classifieds site.

In addition to the location requirements, the state has a long list of training courses tattoo artists need to complete, including a few that are unique to South Carolina. Tattoo artists also need at least 1,000 hours of actual inking during the past three years to tattoo without supervision, and customers under 21 need parental permission to get a tattoo.

"These are the strictest laws in the country," Cochran said. "That's a very, very good thing. The difficulty it takes to get a studio open in this state -- I hope it never drops."

SC bill would drop legal age for tattoos.

An 18-year-old could get a tattoo in South Carolina without parental approval under legislation advanced by lawmakers.

State law currently requires tattoo artists to verify their customers are at least 21 years old. If they're 18, 19, or 20 years old, they need parental consent.

A Senate panel passed a bill Wednesday that would delete that needed approval and set the legal age at 18. It now heads to the full Senate Medical Affairs Committee.

Five Points landowner forcing businesses to close early.

Changes in Five Points are nothing new. You've heard about all of the construction, but chances are you haven't heard about the new early closing times for businesses at the Plaza Center.

"We think it's ridiculous," says Stan Hudgins, of 5 Points Custom Tattoo. Since June 7, 5 Points Custom Tattoo, Sammi's Deli, Body Rites, and Immaculate Body Piercing have all been forced to close at 10:00pm.

They all say they've been told to do so by Landmark Resources, the company that rents space to them, but they don't know why.

The attorney representing Landmark Resources sent WIS News 10's Trey Paul an e-mail Monday. It said all tenants at the plaza center except the restaurant are operating dangerously close to the edge of the occupancy restriction.

Sammi's Deli and Five Points Custom Tattoo say they've tried contacting Landmark Resources and haven't gotten an answer.

Both say if they don't reach an agreement soon, they're prepared to go to court, where they'll request a jury trial.
