Artist drawn to downtown.
Aaron Chine, 29, is surrounded by art all the time. He wears a lot of it in the form of tattoos and makes his living as a professional tattoo artist in Austintown.
Three months ago, he began leasing the former Richard Dickinson School of Ballet studio on the third floor of 160 N. Park Ave. Half of the downtown space is living area, with a couch, bed and television set. The other half serves as his work area and gallery.
Chine has been a tattoo artist for the past five years and has owned Chinebox Ink on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown for the past two years. He said the business is named after his grandfather, who always had a wooden shoe shine box that Chine and his brother played with as children.
His favorite medium is oil on canvas, but he dabbles in all types of art. Still not wanting his creativity to be limited, Chine specializes in large-scale paintings using special ordered canvas that he and several friends stretch to 8-by-11-feet. He then builds his own frames.
He said his paintings depict his political views such as soldiers dying in what he calls an "unjust war." Some of them are animals in danger of extinction, while others depict death.
"I paint what I feel. Some of my work is too obscure or graphic for many of the galleries around here, so I figured I would start my own," Chine said.

The pierced people.
Lying on her back, the soon-to-be pierced female closed her eyes and grasped onto the edge of the sterilized table. She began to shake as Jared Anderson, 29, a body piercer at Evolved, broke the skin on her chest. She inhaled, exhaled, and Anderson slid the bar under her skin and about an inch up her sternum.
"When you get your first piercing, you are breaking ties with a general societal norm and stepping into a different group," said Anderson.
Introduced into commercialized piercing in 2006, microdermals are a single sub-skin piercing instead of the connected stud duo of a traditional surface piercing. According to Anderson, microdermals provide an alternative to surface piercing as having a safer healing process and less potential for rejection. Where surface piercings may not be suitable, two separate microdermals could provide the same effect.
"The good thing about microderms is that you can do them just about anywhere," said Mike Burkley, 26, a body piercer at Piercology.
"Times are changing," Anderson said. "Tattoos and piercings are everywhere nowadays and it's becoming more socially acceptable."

Police Say They Busted Illegal Tattoo Party.
Harry Baldwin of Galion was arrested Wednesday after an anonymous tip led them to the party on Bauer Court, ONN's Stephanie Mennecke reported.
Tattooing parties have become one way that teenagers acquire their body ink, but tattoo artists must be licensed and work in a shop, and anyone under the age of 18 must have parental permission to get a tattoo.
"To have a license you actually have to work in a shop, and the license only covers you while working in the shop," said Crestline Police Lt. David Garrett.
Mike Renner, manager of Squirrelly's Skin Art in Mansfield, said laws regulating tattooing ensure that the procedures are safe. "If they are taking a shortcut on having a license, what else are they taking a shortcut on," Renner said.

Fresh body ink for freshmen.
College opens up a whole new realm of freedom. The freedom to come and go at anytime, the freedom to do homework or not do homework and the freedom to make decisions without parental consent. Some students express this newly-found freedom by staying out late, not doing their homework and getting tattoos.
Mallory Naftzger, freshman, went downtown to On The Edge Body Art Studios and had stars tattooed on her lower back.
Christina Landy, freshman, ventured down to On The Edge on Saturday for her first tattoo, a simple design of three stars on her foot.
On The Edge Tattoo studio has been open for seven years and owner/manager Tobe Drew says he does notice an increase in business in the first couple weeks of school.
The tattoo studio, located on North Main Street, requires a waiver to be signed as well as a photo ID to be presented so it can be photocopied for records. However, the photo ID cannot be a student ID.
Customers 18 and over can get pierced or tattooed without parental consent, which may be where some of the appeal tattoos hold for freshmen comes from.

Body suspension artists let it all hang out at Skully's.
Only Flesh is a Columbus-based group of tattoo and piercing artists whose performances include combinations of body modifications, body suspensions and performance art. The group was founded by front-man "Rev" Shawn Lower in 1997 and is comprised of two bands - Electro Sleaze and Sleaze Core.
Body suspension involves people piercing their bodies with large hooks (think three-to-four inch long fish hooks), attaching chains to the hooks, and then suspending themselves from various fixtures. It is also common for two people to attach a chain to each otgher and play tug-of-war against each other, pulling as hard as they can.
Suspension artist and Only Flesh special guest Maya Sinstress agrees with the spiritual aspect of suspensions. "For us it's very spiritual; it's something that is so relaxing it's kind of like doing yoga, You just have to remember we're not actually in pain," Sinstress said. "It's just something we enjoy."
Only Flesh will be touring in Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit before returning to Columbus to play at Skully's again on Aug. 1.

Piercing safer than appears.
According to piercers and some doctors, with proper aftercare and thorough research of the piercing parlor and piercers, nipple and genital piercings can be a safe and unique form of self expression. Without the proper preparations, piercings can go badly.
"So many people do it as a spur-of-the-moment thing," said Tony Terrell, manager of The Mighty Stained Skin and a professional piercer with 13 years of experience. "That spur-of-the-moment thing could cost you a trip to the hospital."
Tattoo and piercing parlors have very strict sanitation procedures they must follow to be licensed. They must have a separate room labeled as a biohazard for cleaning their equipment. All needles are one-time use and must be disposed of in biohazard sharps boxes that are picked up and disposed of by an outside company. Sterile gloves must be worn at all times.
Dr. John Hedge, who specializes in family medicine, said genital and nipple piercings aren't necessarily unsafe. Hedge said the biggest risks with these types of piercings are infection, allergic reactions to jewelry and rejection by the body.
Nick Wolak, owner of Evolved, stopped piercing with hoops five years ago because hoops had a 30 percent chance of rejection as opposed to a 5 percent risk with barbells. Wolak said to avoid cheap jewelry. At Evolved they only use the highest standard of jewelry - titanium. Another quality option is 316LVMF steel jewelry. Terrell uses 316LVM, which is implant-grade surgical steel.

Tainted Expressions on South Mulberry Street is where the ancient art of the tattoos is practiced under the motto "Body Art with a Touch of Eleg-ance."
Head artist locally is Michel Hill, 35, who alternates between a similar business in his hometown Bellefontaine and here. Tainted also offers body piercing.

Art of body suspension makes way to Cincinnati.
There are a wide variety of positions individuals can be suspended in. Perhaps the most common is the "suicide suspension," where a person is hung vertically from hooks in the back. Chest suspensions and "superman" or "superwoman" suspensions, where people are suspended face-down horizontally, are also popular.
Suspension made it's way to Cincinnati at a Cincinnati spring meet held March 10. The meet was organized by Meg Barber, a body piercer at Beelistic Tattoo and Piercing on Clifton Avenue and Sarah Wolfe, who is a nurse's aid and Over-the-Rhine resident.
The suspensions were led by members of the Columbus and Louisville chapters of iHung and the New York and New Jersey chapters of Rites of Passage. In all, 11 individuals were suspended, including several Cincinnatians.
According to Jason Shaw, one of the founding members of iHung, people try suspension for a variety of reasons and each benefit from it in their own way. He said he has seen such benefits as increased self-confidence, adrenaline boosts and spiritual experiences.
While some participants find the experience uplifting, others find it soothing. "Suspending for me is always a very calming experience," Zak Crouch, a body piercer at Beelistic said. "Beforehand I'm always nervous and shaky, but afterwards I'm always very calm and centered."
Additionally, it is important to be in good health, according to Joy Rumore, who has been leading suspensions with Rites of Passage for five years. "Just as it is with [body] piercing, tattooing or any other kind of modification work, you are putting a strain on your immune system and need to be in good physical and mental health to heal up properly," Rumore said.

Be cautious with piercings.
Signs of a piercing skin infection can include a thick green discharge from the piercing, the piercing site being painful; inflamed, throbbing, swollen, fire red, really warm.
Touching the piercing with dirty hands is one thing John Von, piercer at On the Edge, sees a lot and says causes infection.
Andrea Colcord, health educator at the Wellness Connection, said a piercing site needs to be kept clean because it is vulnerable to bacteria. "Because a piercing is an open wound, bacteria and other organisms can get into the wound when one touches their piercing with dirty hands," Colcord said.
Choosing a location that is clean is important to cut down the risk of infection, according to Glenn Egelman, director of the Health Center. Moist areas contain more bacteria.
If someone thinks they have an infection they should contact a health care provider so they can look at it. They can take a culture of the infection by swabbing it and see what is wrong. "They can see what kind of organisms are growing and can treat them with antibiotics," Egelman said.

Tattoo shops in area gain respect, clientele.
When Bradley Cooper took over a down-on-its-luck tattoo studio in southwest Toledo seven years ago, his plans were to transform the place into a profitable studio that could win Better Business Bureau membership while offering tattooing and piercing. "Every penny we made went back into that studio," recalled Mr. Cooper, who later opened a second location of Needle Masters Tattoo Studio in West Toledo.
Today, a full-time tattoo artist in metro Toledo typically makes between $20,000 and $50,000, according to people in the business. A growing number possess college degrees in graphic arts. Tattoo prices start at about $100 an hour locally, although a simple tattoo can cost as little as $50.
While some studios struggle to survive, others earn a healthy profit. "It's like any industry," said Bill Johnson, a studio owner in Orlando, Fla., who is spokesman for the National Tattoo Association. "You can open a convenience store and not run it properly and have to close. In Orlando, two or three places open ever year, and a couple close down."
Mr. Lee, who operates Revelation Tattoos Ltd. with a business partner in West Toledo, has a six-week waiting list. He specializes in photo-like human and animal images. He charges $125 to $150 an hour, with some sessions running three hours or more.

What Are You Wearing?
Helyn Dell wears her memories on her sleeve, her head, and around her neck. "Everything [on me] has its own story and significance".
In clothing, she opts for thrift store wear in natural fibers, which she'll cut and alter to fit, and patterns in texture that are distinctive but simple, so as not to compete with the designs on her skin. Dell has been under a tattoo artist's needle 13 times. "I'm confusing enough to look at without putting a lot of big patterns on top of it," she said.
Across her chest, Dell wears signs of her family and a sacred heart, an icon of her Catholic upbringing that's also a personal symbol of unconditional love. "The birds represent my mother and father, who's already passed," she said. "It's to keep them both together and close to the love."

Canton tattoo parlors will have to keep proof of customers' age.
Tattoo parlors in Canton will soon have to keep proof on file that customers are at least 18 years old when they get tattooed.
At a City Council legal and ordinance committee meeting Tuesday, Alderman Pam Ihnes said she has fielded questions recently about whether the city's two tattoo parlors must have liability insurance.
The committee also discussed whether to allow body piercing at tattoo parlors, but no aldermen favored it, and no one came to the meeting to make a case for it.
