Way forward on hep C blood products infections.
A $30 million package to provide one-off payments to an estimated 550 people is part of a way forward for people who were infected with hepatitis C through the New Zealand blood supply, Health Minister Pete Hodgson announced today.
The maximum amount a person could be eligible for is around $70,000. Not all eligible people will receive that amount, as the amount will vary between individuals. As a result, some people might receive a much lower payment or no payment, especially when they have already received previous payments from ACC, from the government, or from other countries.
Hepatitis C is transmitted by blood-to-blood contact. That means people, who received blood transfusions or blood products in New Zealand before screening of donor blood began in July 1992, may have contracted the virus.
People who share drug-injecting equipment, including syringes and needles, are also at risk. A small number of people may become infected through unsterile tattooing or body piercing practices or needle stick injuries. People in these groups will not be eligible for the one -off payment.

Tatoo artist to cease working.
The Hutt Valley tattoo artist whose work has been linked to at least three severe infections has agreed to stop work until health officials complete an urgent investigation.
In the most serious case, a man in his 20s contracted the flesh eating disease necrotising fasciitis and lost a quarter of his body tissue during emergency surgery at Hutt Hospital.
Wellington Medical Officer of Health Margot McLean says they have carried out an initial infection control process and they are now starting a full investigation.

Fourth infection thought linked to Samoan tattoo.
A fourth person is feared to have contracted an infection from a Samoan tattoo session, and doctors are being asked to check their records for other possible cases.
One young man has had nearly 25 per cent of his skin removed to save him from the flesh-eating disease necrotising fasciitis.
Another man also caught the flesh-eating disease, while another had cellulitis, a serious skin inflammation around an infected wound.
Wellington medical officer of health Margot McLean told the Dominion Post information from local GPs had uncovered a fourth case suspected to be linked to the same tattoo artist.
Tattooist Sua Vitale Fa'alavelave, who is believed to have been involved in at least two of the cases, has agreed to stop his work.

Joint investigation into serious illnesses.
Regional Public Health officials and the Department of Labour are investigating the practices of a tattooist after two young men in the Wellington region became seriously ill, one of whom is still in Hutt Hospital recovering from a life-threatening infection.
During preliminary inquiries by Regional Public Health the traditional Samoan tattooist voluntarily agreed to stop work.
No statutes or regulations specifically control tattooing and body piercing in New Zealand. However, these practices are subject to generic consumer safety legislation, administered by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, and the Health and Safety in Employment Act (for the body artistes themselves).
Additionally, city or district councils can regulate practice through local by-laws, and some councils currently do.
