Panel answers tattoo questions.
To explore the tattooing process, its history and the diverse designs and individuals who chose to be tattooed, the Branigan Cultural Center, on the Downtown Mall, has designed an exhibit titled "INK: Tattoos as Personal Expression," which will be displayed through Jan. 24.
Local tattoo artists from Black Rat Tattoo, 1770 S. Telshor Blvd., who joined the panel, said Black Rat Tattoo will not work on clients younger than 18, even with a parent's consent. Artists at the tattoo parlor also refuse to tattoo hands or faces, a practice that is illegal in some states.
Tick, 28, a tattoo artist who goes by just one name, warned it is also a decision that will remain with an individual for the rest of their life.
In addition to refusing service to individuals who appear to be intoxicated, fellow tattoo artist Keith Johnson, 30, said, "Sometimes, you just have to tell people it's a bad idea" if they seem uncertain about the decision.
Slaughter said the Branigan Cultural Center chose artists from Black Rat Tattoo for the panel because they came recommended by other local artists and the Las Cruces Police Department's Gang Unit.
