Meadowlands Fair organizers search for Hudson's best tattoo.

"State Fair Meadowlands is all about having fun," said its president, Al Dorso. "We pride ourselves on some unique attractions. What's more unique than your own, individual body art? We want people to show it off."

The best tattoo contest will be held at the fair on June 22 after 6 p.m. Hudson County applicants can register online at www.njfair.com.

For all contests, applicants must complete the online form and upload a picture related to the contest of their choice.

The deadline for registration and uploading is June 8. Finalists will be notified in advance. Fair entry is free for all finalists.

Germinario, 37, the owner of Hardnox Tattoo on Paterson Plank Road in Secaucus, may have some clients who enter. A Hoboken native who went to Weehawken High School, he lived in Secaucus for 10 years and has had his tattoo shop in town for nine years.

He was been tattooing for close to 16 years, starting just around the time that tattoos first became popular. Germinario believes that trend will continue.

It pays to plan. Designs should complement one another and flow with the body part they're augmenting.

2. Work with your artist to create a one-of-a-kind tattoo.

You have the option of choosing a flash piece from booklets or tattoo shop walls. However, many tattoo artists enjoy doing original work. Some have technical and fine art training and sell their artwork separately.

3. The tattoo taboo has dissipated.

Once thought of as a practice associated with criminals, tattoos are now widely accepted.

4. Advancements in machinery, ink, and care tactics have led to remarkable outcomes.

It's now common to see intricate designs that have taken many hours to complete and cost thousands of dollars. Improvements in pigments provide many more color selections.

5. Don't believe everything you see and hear.
