Shawn Sheikhan faces deportation from U.S.
Shawn Sheikhan, the mouthy pro poker player and Las Vegas tattoo parlor proprietor, may be deported from the United States on a conviction of sexual battery and annoyance or molestation of a child from more than a decade ago.
Sheikhan's possible deportation stems from a 1995 misdemeanor conviction in Contra Costa County, Calif. He served nine months in jail and received five years of probation for the offense.
The 38-year-old is fighting the deportation, his lawyer said Tuesday. Sheikhan is also considering revisiting the California conviction based on constitutional issues that include ineffective counsel, the lawyer said.
Sheikhan was born in Iran but emigrated to the U.S. at the age of nine. He received permanent residency in 1983 and has since married and had a daughter in the country, where he owns six tattoo, piercing and clothing shops.

$5 million for Kings Beach properties.
A California developer has offered $5 million for a collection of downtown Kings Beach properties being sold in a felony bankruptcy and fraud case.
The land for sale houses several shops along Highway 28, including Lucky 7 Tattoo, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Scraps Dog Bakery, a small strip mall, a trailer park and undeveloped land.
The courts and the bankruptcy trustee have determined that $5 million is a fair offer for the Kings Beach properties. At the Dec. 11 auction in San Jose, any competitors will have to offer $5.25 million as the floor bid and bid up by $100,000 per offer until a winning bidder is awarded the properties.
Michael Dunsford, a local real estate agent with Century 21 who has worked on the sale, said that if S.K. Brown is the winning bidder, he plans to keep in place the tenants already housed in the downtown properties.

'Tattoos and Trash' crashes the downtown art scene at MTZC.
First imagined by Las Vegas punk rocker and tattoo artist Dirk Vermin in 2001 as a traveling exhibit proving the talents of skin artists go beyond ink on flesh, the first "Tattoos and Trash" was a hit, both in Pomona, Calif. and here in Vegas.
That success inspired Vermin to pursue the notion of opening his own gallery, which he did in May 2002 when Gallery Au Go-Go took over a vacant space adjacent to his Pussykat Tattoo Parlor on Maryland Parkway.
Done on a much smaller scale than previous years, the 2006 version of "Tattoos and Trash" features approximately 15 artists, primarily Pussykat mainstays such as Joe Marro, Rogerio Silva, Dave Logue, Buddy Holiday and Vermin himself.
Most of the art featured in "Tattoos and Trash," which runs through the end of October, is not for sale, unlike most shown in downtown's galleries. This further reinforces the notion of art for art's sake – these pieces, for the most part, are merely reflections of the passion of their creators.

Hanging in the 'hood.
A (short) guide to cool joints around UNLV.
There are a number of reasons to hang around campus before, between and after classes. We're going to share with you some of the hidden gems of the University District, whether your thing is shopping, drinking or getting inked*.
Pussykat Tattoo Parlor, 4972 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 12, (702) 597-1549. Owned by local punk legend Dirk Vermin, Pussykat doesn't sell smoking accessories or detoxifying drinks, doesn't do piercings and doesn't mess around. This is a pure, old-school tattoo shop. Pussykat's artists have been featured in a number of national publications, and Vermin himself is in high demand. His waiting list hovers around the three-month mark, and he has even been called upon to draw a temporary tattoo onto Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman.

From rite of passage to reality television, tattoos are no longer taboo.
Her Led Zeppelin tattoo, covered up since that time when she was “a little toughie” 18 year old, turned out to be the first of many colorful pieces of artwork that now, 20 years later, cover most of her body. “It’s like a suit of armor,” Kathleen Langley, co-owner and senior body piercer at Lucky 7 Tattoo & Piercing in Kings Beach, says as she describes how her tattoos make her feel.
Working as a piercer for 14 years, Langley says not too many things manage to shock her these days, except for when 75 year olds walk into the door asking for their first tattoos.
Corey Boobar, Lucky 7 co-owner, says he once inked a girl with the name of her boyfriend. They ended up breaking up before it even healed, he says. If the relationship fails, Esperanza Devers is there to erase the past. Devers, a registered nurse at the Center for Dermatology and Laser Surgery in Sacramento, has consulted with dozens of people who hope to have their mistakes just go away.
Boobar says customers must be at least 18 years old and have identification in hand if they want to get tattooed. The rules for piercings do allow those under 18 with a parent or guardian present, Langley says.
