Rite of Passage Tattoo is now open.
Austin native Holly Lewno has opened a new business in her hometown so she can put her talent on canvass — the human body.
“Putting a piece of artwork on someone’s body is like putting a piece of me on there,” she said. “I’ve been an artist all my life.”
An Austin High School graduate, Lewno moved around for several years, and had her tattooing apprenticeship at Thee Dragon's Lair in Owatonna. She returned to Austin to raise her 17-month-old son near family.
Tattoos start at $50 and up. Tattoo design books are available; Lewno will tattoo customer’s designs as well as her own.
Rite of Passage Tattoo is located at 714 1/2 Fourth Ave. N.E. Hours are noon to close, Tuesday through Saturday. To schedule an appointment, call (507) 355-1937.

The barber pole may remain outside 416 Chestnut Street, but the styling chair has now been replaced with a tattoo chair. Ink has come to Chaska.
Armando Ruiz is the owner of Blue Magic Tattoo. He opened nearly a month ago and has since been drawing in a number of curious passerbys.
For the past 13 years, Ruiz has been doing tattoos at home. But seeing an opening in the market for him to open a tattoo shop, he decided to take the plunge. “It seems people have been happy with my work so far,” he said.
Ruiz encourages people to come in as many times as necessary until they know what they want. And once a design is chosen, placement is important, especially if pain is a concern.
Only a month into his experience, Ruiz already has plans for what’s next. “I’m adding piercings in two weeks,” he said. Ruiz is planning to hire someone to do body piercings in addition to his tattoos. “Right now it seems incomplete without that,” he said.

Tattoo artist gets start in Prior Lake.
Tattoo apprentice Alex Morse of Burnsville got his start as a tattoo artist about a year ago at Canvas Tattoo and Piercing Studio in Prior Lake.
Morse is still an apprentice. He works full-time under Jay Jay at the studio while learning the trade and building his own clientele.
Morse enjoys creating “new-school” tattoos, which are generally really colorful and “crazy”, he said.
He also enjoys tattooing black-and-gray realism pieces such as recreating a picture of a flower or another photograph.
Morse skateboards, draws, plays guitar and creates legal graffiti in his spare time away from the studio.

Local piercer added to 'Olde Town' ensemble.
Piercing and poking through people's skin and cartilage using various custom or standard pieces of jewelry is the job of Andy Sandberg, Olde Town Tattoo's newest employee.
Sandberg, like a lot of body piercers, is mainly self-taught. He has been piercing people for a little more than five years and began his career at Cloud 9 in St. Cloud, where he had his apprenticeship and also worked with Olde Town Owner Scotty Stommes.
Sandberg's advice to any one looking to get some piercing done is to make sure the person you're getting pierced by has a portfolio.
"If the person doesn't have a portfolio of work they have done for you to view, walk out. It is the same for tattoo artists," Sandberg said.
Sandberg said he would be interested in passing on the art of piercing to someone who was interested in learning how to become a piercer.
"I would consider apprenticing someone if the right person came along. I'd be super picky, but if you're super interested, stop in and have a little chat with me," Sandberg said.

St. Cloud, Minnesota

St. Cloud's newest addition to the tattoo world, Olde Town Tattoo, is now open, offering only custom tattoos.
The owner, Scotty Stommes, who is also known as Scotty Munster, has been laying down ink for about six and a half years. Stommes worked at Cloud 9 for about four and a half years, and then went to work at Wingnut Tattoo in Anoka, Minn. When Wingnut decided to open a shop in St. Cloud, Stommes made the move with them. After about one and a half years at the St. Cloud Wingnut, when the opportunity for Stommes to open his own shop arose, he jumped on it.
Stommes has recently set a new record for most awards taken by a single artist. He won 19 awards at the 17th annual Shades of Blue competition in La Crosse, Wisc. He also took home first place in the artist competition and best of show.
"We attended Rick's 12th annual International Tattoo Convention in Greenbay, Wisc. the last weekend in January," Stommes said. "And took two trophies of about 18 total that were up for grabs, so that was pretty good for me."
Olde Town has another tattoo artist, Josh Walker, who worked at Rising Phoenix previously, which was located in the same building that Olde Town now occupies.
Olde Town is hoping to add another artist in the near future, Stommes said. "I would rather apprentice someone in than take from another shop," Stommes said. "I have to find a good artist, and I am going to be very picky about who I apprentice."

Tattoo artist signs on to illustrate children’s books.
If anything in the illustrations of the new children’s book “Doghouse Dreams” is reminiscent of Karl Schneider’s signature style, it’s got to be the doe eyes of Rex and Missy.
Schneider has been drawing those large glossy eyes of his on people’s skin for about seven years.
A tattoo artist at Cactus Tattoo in Mankato, Schneider has developed a unique, signature drawing style that can be seen in the nuances of his first children’s book, “Doghouse Dreams,” the first children’s book by PDXpublications, which recently was released by BookSurge Publishing.

St. Cloud, Minnesota

Downtown St. Cloud offers a variety of shops, restaurants and hidden attractions for many.
For more than 10 years, Cloud 9 Tattoo has been hard at work tattooing and piercing the clients who walk through the door.
"Much of our clientele are relatively new, but the majority of them are students," said Mark Gripp, an employee of Cloud 9. "We have a fair amount of returning clients that spread our work by word-of-mouth and that helps us out."
Gripp said he is the most proud of the portraits he tattoos on clients because they are so meaningful. With students coming in left and right looking to get a piercing or tattoo, Cloud 9 stays busy. The establishment offers $5 off any piercing with a student ID, which helps draw students in.
Cloud 9 Tattoo is located at 714 W. St. Germain and is owned by Wade Brunette. With one other location in Elk River, Cloud 9 has made a name for itself with students and members of the community.

Consumers Gain During Legislative Session.
Minnesota consumers made numerous gains during the 2007 Legislative Session as lawmakers took steps to improve their quality of life. Minnesota Association for Justice President Chris Messerly said that Minnesota is a pro-consumer state because individuals, organizations, and lawmakers are committed to preserving the rights and safety of the citizens of our state.
- Restricting lead in jewelry -- A law that goes into effect on Sept. 1 restricts the manufacturing and sale of jewelry that contains lead. This includes body piercing jewelry. Minnesota’s new law uses federal guidelines regarding safe levels of lead content. The new law also includes tighter restrictions for jewelry intended for children younger than six. The bill’s House author said that the bill originated after several incidents of children swallowing jewelry containing lead.
- Parental consent for piercing Excluding an earlobe, anyone younger than 18 must have parental or legal guardian permission to get a body part pierced. Those providing the piercing service must witness the parent or legal guardian signing and dating the consent.
