Tat's all folks.
George Wiggins says a cheap tattoo isn't good, and a good tattoo isn't cheap.
The Leominster resident should know. He's been tattooing professionally since 1994. Having apprenticed under several well-known master artists, today Wiggins works on a variety of customers - from college students to Major League baseball players like Red Sox Jonathan Papelbon - from his studio at Flesh By Design in Fitchburg.
He says a tattoo can cost anywhere from $50 to as much as $100 to $150 an hour for larger pieces. Wiggins says some artists charge even more.
Wiggins says he has had the privilege of learning from some big names in the tattooing world like Corey Kruger and Paul Booth. He has worked from Massachusetts to Alaska on such famous clientele as Papelbon and members of the Puerto Rican band Puya.

More Ink, Less Skin.
At Chameleon Tattoo & Body Piercing in Cambridge, tattoo artist Jason Billingsgate described the tattooing process in almost spiritual terms. “It’s the only form of art that can express certain types of emotions,” Billingsgate explained. “I’d say 90 percent of customers come in for a tattoo because they have something they want to express. But about ten percent come in because it’s a fad."
At Pino Brothers Ink, another tattoo parlor in Cambridge, Deirdre Doyle is a successful woman in what she believes to be a male-dominated profession. “People have been decorating their bodies since they could,” Doyle remarked. “But now that it’s in the public eye, it’s more of a commodity rather than a culture.”
Aside from the fear of mutilation, the fear of addiction is another issue of concern in the tattooing profession, remarked David “Salty” Bryson, an apprentice at Redemption Tattoo Incorporated. “A lot of people get one [tattoo] and they realize it’s not as bad as they thought; and it snowballs from there.”
Unlike the prospect of addiction, the threat of health risks, such as infection or the spread of hepatitis or HIV are minimal, according to Jason Ciccia, the owner of Chromatic Tattoo & Body Piercing Studio. “If you’re clean and you know what you’re doing, there isn’t any [risk],” Ciccia mused.
Across the board, these four tattoo artists working in four different tattoo parlors appear to agree on several issues. Unsurprisingly, they all agree that tattooing is an ever-changing profession, from the typical type of customer to the typical type of tattoo to the typical place on the body being tattooed.

Brookline gets first tattoo parlor.
The second-floor space on Commonwealth Avenue and Babcock Street became Brookline’s first tattoo parlor last week. Jason Loui, a New Hampshire resident, co-opened the shop above T. Anthony’s Pizzeria, literally steps away from Boston, with business partner Cory Kruger.
Despite his easygoing approach, Loui’s commitment to tattooing is no joke. The 28-year-old former owner of Redemption Tattoo in Cambridge has been inking clients for nearly a decade, bringing his clientele along with each new business venture.
The same goes for Kruger, who already has a yearlong waiting list before the Brookline shop even has a sign in its window, Loui said.
Already knee-deep in clientele just days after opening, Loui and the other tattoo artists at Good Faith said they couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
Good Faith Tattoos is at 1018 Commonwealth Ave., second floor. For more information, call 978-365-300 or visit myspace.com/goodfaithii.

Candela expands tattoo removal business.
Candela Corp. is injecting some green into a startup that's developing a "permanent but removable" tattoo ink.
The company yesterday said it made a "financial investment" in Freedom-2 LLC and inked an exclusive deal with the New York City company to develop a tattoo-removal device.
Gerard Puorro, Candela's chief executive, said tattoo-removal procedures have become one of the fastest-growing segments of the aesthetic market.
Removal of the Freedom-2 ink would involve a single, standard laser treatment that breaks apart the beaded biomaterial and ink, according to the company.
Laser treatments are considered an effective way to remove tattoos but can be costly and typically require multiple treatments. Alternatives to erase body art include the more invasive procedures of dermabrasion, cryosurgery and excision.

Mother convicted of abuse in daughter's botched piercing.
A mother whose teenage daughter nearly died from an infection caused by a bellybutton piercing was convicted Tuesday of endangering her daughter's life by failing to seek medical attention until she was gravely ill.
A Suffolk County jury convicted Robinson, 39, of wantonly and recklessly permitting substantial bodily injury to a child under 14, a felony that carries a maximum prison term of five years. She was to be sentenced Oct. 26.
The girl suffered extensive organ damage from an infection that ravaged her body. For nearly a week, doctors were unsure whether she would survive. But after multiple surgeries and weeks of rehabilitation, she made a full recovery.

They say it takes a strong man to wear pink. But Mark and Hollie Hesse think it takes an even stronger woman.
The owners of Scorpion Tattooing in Derry are offering free pink ribbon tattoos to breast cancer survivors on Sunday.
Mark Hesse, a tattoo artist who has won several national awards for his work, one of which was for a rendering of the Dalai Lama, decided to hold the event in honor his mother, who died in 1968, at age 40, of breast cancer. Mark Hesse was just 15.
This year, nearly 212,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and nearly 41,000 will die from it, according to statistics from the American Cancer Society. A small number of men, about 1,760, will be diagnosed with the disease and 460 will die from it.
The Hesses hope that painting survivors permanently pink - which they see as a symbol of hope - will raise awareness of the deadly disease.

Council set to ink tattoo ordinance.
Since the state lifted the ban on tattoos and body art five years ago, tattoo parlors have popped up throughout SouthCoast. Fall River has five, with names like Avenue Ink, Up in Flames and Eternal Ink. Wareham has two, called In the Pink Needles and Ink and Sinners and Saints. In Westport, there's Dark Star Tattoos and Body Piercing, while Dartmouth has FU Tattoo and Tattoos On Point. But there is not one tattoo parlor in New Bedford, the largest city in the region.
That will likely change with the passage of a new ordinance, which would allow tattoo parlors in all business and industrial-zoned areas of the city, with certain restrictions. Tattoo parlors cannot locate within 200 feet of a school, church or day-care center. Tattoo parlors cannot be located within 1,000 feet of each other. The ordinance states that tattoo parlors cannot open before 10 a.m. or remain open after 10 p.m
Any applicant must receive a license from the city's Board of Health, per state law, and a special permit from the city's Zoning Board of Appeals.
The ordinance, which passed through a council committee by a 10-1 vote, now heads to the council for affirmation. The ordinance needs to be approved at the council's Dec. 21 meeting and again at its next meeting two weeks later to go into effect.
