One of its own returns to Mercer Gallery.

Buck Reist, an alumnus of Deerfield High School and GCCC, will bring with him comic book heroes and villains like Spider Man, Wolverine, Cat Woman and the Joker.

An artist who works at Fine Line Tattoo in Topeka, Reist paints in his spare time, focusing much of his attention on comic book art.

Some of his paintings will be available for purchase at the exhibition, which runs through Sept. 23. Prices range from $80 to $1,200.

Reist's work kicks off the 18th season of exhibitions at the Mercer Gallery. Upcoming shows this semester will feature the 10th Annual Sandhills Art Association Juried Exhibition Sept. 29 to Oct. 29, a November show called Asian Inspired Vessels and Ceramics of America's Nuclear Family, and the GCCC Art Faculty Exhibition.

The Mercer Gallery is in the west wing of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building at GCCC, 801 Campus Drive. Admission is free, and public viewing hours after Sunday's reception are noon to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Lost art?

For years, local tattoo artists have cornered the Oklahoma market because tattoo shops are illegal there.

But that could change soon. Oklahoma is considering allowing tattoo licenses for the first time in state history.

"It will probably affect it at first," said Mike Shea, owner of Skinsations Tattoo & Body Piercing on South Summit Street.

Shea estimates 50 percent of his clients are from Oklahoma. They drive across the state line to get tattoos at his Ark City shop.

"A lot of people in Oklahoma may not make a drive to Kansas for awhile, but once they realize other shops don't do quality work, they'll be back, " he said.

Shea said tattoo shops in Kansas are heavily regulated by the board of cosmetology. Kansas is one of the strictest states on tattoo shop regulations, he said.
