Illinois Tattoo And Body Piercing

Mom's WWII career inspires daughter's tattoo.

When she turned 30, Cilla Sluga drove all by herself to Florida.

When she turned 40, Cilla went for a ride in a hot-air balloon.

When she turned 50, well, she’s not talking about that one.

And recently, when she turned 60, Cilla got a tattoo — but not just any tattoo.

“Every time I add a new decade in my life,” reads an e-mail from Cilla, “I try to do something special … something that someone ‘my age’ would not ordinarily do. … (It’s) my personal rebellion, my mini-revolution.”

During World War II, while husbands, sons and brothers were away, the women at home were called on to step up and go to work, literally, for the war effort. Women by the millions who traditionally filled the role of homemaker grabbed their lunch pails and reported to work in factories. Thus was born Rosie the Riveter.

One of those millions who answered her country’s call was 16-year-old Emily Zanck. Emily went to work at the Douglas Aircraft factory near Chicago. She was a real Rosie the Riveter; she worked as a wing riveter on warplanes.

After those years, Emily got married and raised a family, and one of her daughters is Cilla Sluga in Springfield.

About five years ago, Cilla and her mother were at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. They saw a Rosie the Riveter poster inside one of the restaurants. Cilla was taking her mom’s picture in front of the poster when passers-by stopped to ask if Emily were, indeed, a Rosie. When they found out that she was, a small crowd stopped to talk to her about it.

Maybe it was a big deal after all, Emily thought.

One-third of Illinois inmates get tattoos.

Nearly one-third of men in Illinois prisons have gotten a tattoo while behind bars -- a risky behavior when it comes to HIV infection, a new study found.

The study by researchers at Chicago State University found that 29 percent of incarcerated men have gotten tattoos while in jail.

Researchers surveyed 526 women and 1,293 men in Illinois prisons about their HIV risk behaviors, including sexual intercourse, injected drug use, needle sharing, tattooing and body piercing.

Ask Chicagoist: Where Can I Get a Tattoo?

Is there any tattoo studio and/or artist that comes highly recommended?

The artist many of our friends have utilized is Deluxe Tattoo (1459 W Irving Park, 773-549-1594). Everyone we've met there is very kind, extremely artistic, and not at all sketchy.

In particular at the shop, artist Hannah Aitchison does remarkable work and does it quickly, which can help save you some cash. She seems to have an extraordinary eye for color, which makes all the tattoos we've seen her do really stand out from the crowd.

If Deluxe Tattoo doesn't seem up your alley, there are plenty of other options.

Tomato Tattoo (1855 W. Chicago Ave., 312-226-6660)

Tatu Tattoo (1754 W. North Ave., 773-772-8288)

Insight Studios (1026 N. Milwaukee Ave., 773-342-4444)

Taylor Street Tattoo (1150 W. Taylor St., 312-455-8288)

Chicago Tattooing Company (1017 W. Belmont Ave., 773-528-6969)

Golgotha Tattoos starts anew with name change.

Former Golgotha tattoo artist Darren King is opening a new store called Karma Tattoos, located at 100 N. Glenview St. in Suite 207.

In July, the Illinois Senate passed Senate Bill 927, which regulated the tattoo and piercing industry in Illinois for the first time on a state level. The law places extra requirements on shop owners, including having a separate room for sterilization and light colored tile on the floor.

Piercer Scott Randolph, who also worked at Golgotha, said the old parlor was in accordance with almost every requirement, but constructing a new sterilization room in the old location was not feasible. The change in venue allows for better flow around the parlor and lets the artists get a fresh start, he said.

At Golgotha, owner and artist Darren Ashbaugh, who is also moving to Karma, ran the show. At Karma, all the artists will sub-contract with King, which means they pay rent to operate out of the store. All the artists are now their own boss and have more freedom to work how they see fit, King said.

He said Karma will guarantee all of its work, which means touch-ups and re-dos are free. King said Karma will also have computers so customers can bring in a flash drive and show the artists pictures or renderings of the artwork they are looking for. Karma will also accept credit cards, a change from Golgotha.

Mouth Mashers.

The newest type of mouth ornamentation is the “grill.” This is a decorative cover that fits snugly over the teeth. The most expensive grills are made of gold, silver or platinum and may be encrusted with jewels. Grills are typically designed to be removable.

The newly popularized grills have their own set of problems. Food can become trapped between the metal and the teeth, leading to tooth decay and possible gum disease. Trapped bacteria can also cause bad breath. Each time the grill is removed and replaced, excess pressure is placed on the bone that anchors the teeth. Some people hold the grill in place with permanent glue, which can damage the teeth or gums.

Mouth grills should only be used occasionally and should be removed while eating. Clean the grill after every use to remove food, bacteria and debris. Wearing a grill sometimes changes the way the teeth come together, which may place significant stress and inflammation of the temporomandibular joint. Some people may need to perform jaw exercises after wearing a grill to reduce some of the inflammation on the joint.

Tattoo typo? Man sues over alleged misspelling.

Mr. Michael Duplessis is suing a Northwest Side tattoo parlor in connection with a tattoo he received that he alleges mistakenly read “CHI-TONW” above a rendering of a John Hancock Center-like skyscraper.

The misspelled tattoo, which Mr. Duplessis received at Jade Dragon Tattoo Inc. at 5331 W. Belmont Ave., has caused the Chicago man “emotional distress from public ridicule” and “loss of self-esteem and psychological pain and suffering,” according to a complaint filed Feb. 13 in Cook County Circuit Court.

A court date is scheduled for June 27, according to the Circuit Court’s Web site.

Body piercing becomes more popular among students.

All types of piercings are requested at NewLife Tattoos, 404 E. Green St., but some are much more popular than others.

According to Matt Bavougian, the head piercer at NewLife, the most popular piercings are cartilage, lip, nostril, tongue, eyebrow, naval and nipple piercings. On any given day, it is common for him to do one or more of the aforementioned piercings in a small room that has a sign informing customers that he is a "professional piercer on duty."

Joel Molina, an apprentice piercer at NewLife, has seen many different types of surface piercings, including piercings on people's hips, the webbing between the thumb and forefinger and on the nape of the neck.

Genital piercings are also uncommon, and Bavougian said maybe one is performed every month. More popular genital piercings include a hood piercing on a woman or a piercing through the urethra on a man, also known as a "Prince Albert."

"The most mean thing I've ever done to someone is an ampallang where you pierce sideways through the penis," Bavougian said. "I tried to be as gentle as possible, though."

Bears 'No. 1 fan' puts it in writing.

If there's a piece of tat with a Bears logo on it that Oak Forest resident Teba Maber Wilkerson doesn't own, she hasn't found it yet.

It doesn't need to be game day for Wilkerson -- known to friends as "Ma Bear" -- to wear Bears earrings, a Bears hat, Bears sneakers, Bears sweatpants and an orange T-shirt declaring an amended 2nd Amendment to the Constitution: the right to arm Bears.

She's one of a handful of supporters who are using the team's first trip to the Super Bowl in 21 years to make the ultimate display of loyalty: a Bears tattoo. Braving the tattooist's needle at Basement Ink in Oak Forest this week, Wilkerson, 37, said the roaring Bear logo on her back "is only the start."

Tattoo artist Jose Zamora said he expected other fans to come in for Bears tattoos over the next week. He would throw anyone out of the parlor if they asked for a Colts tattoo, he said, "either that or tell them 'yes' and then give them a Bears tattoo."

But staff at Tattoo Skin Art in Lockport were happy to accommodate a New Orleans Saints fan who called last week asking for a Saints tattoo. Paul South, 47, of Plainfield, showed up to get the New Orleans tattoo on Tuesday, even though his team lost. "You've gotta stick with your team," he said.

Mind Over Matter - Hypnosis can relieve the pain of tattooing.

Melvin, of DeKalb, was being tattooed while hypnotized at Proton Studios in Cortland. DeKalb hypnotherapist Randy Scott has been working with the studio for about a month, putting customers into a trance so they feel little or no pain while being inked.

Tattoo artist Chris May said Melvin's tattoo is not in a particularly painful spot, and Melvin rated the pain he was feeling before the trance around 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. But past hypnosis customers were able to relax while being tattooed in sensitive places like the ribs, lower back or stomach, where pain is usually a 10, May said. He said the relaxed customers are easier to tattoo than those feeling the full dose of pain.

Guy Montgomery, a doctor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, said hypnosis works exactly as it appears to work in the tattoo studio - by helping people to relax and changing their expectations.

Though pop culture images of hypnosis often portray people as robotic or having no memory, Melvin just seemed deeply relaxed. He remained aware of what was happening around him and was able to carry on a normal conversation while in the trance.

Ottawa, Illinois
05/31/06

In the plan to turn downtown Ottawa into a tourist attraction, some businesses fit and some don't.

Examples of businesses that don't fit are banks, dry cleaners, tattoo parlors, professional offices and loan companies. In fact, any business that doesn't provide dining, retail goods or entertainment -- which includes The Times -- fails to find a place in the downtown vision.

An owner of such a business, Ron Bertalot of Permanent Images tattoo parlor on La Salle Street, disagreed on the tourist draw of his shop. "We do attract tourists. And I know they spend money and eat in Ottawa. I've had people come from Chicago and Peoria. One woman came from Oregon (the state)."

New law: tattoo parlor inspections.

A new state law will give the unregulated tattoo and body piercing industry rules to follow and local health inspectors will drop by those shops once a year.

"It will minimize the spread of blood borne pathogens like HIV, hepatitis those will be minimized because the facilities will be regulated," said Dorothy David of the Peoria City/County Health Department.

"We've never been opposed to it, we always thought it should be something down," said Nic Losen of Twisted Vision tattoos and piercing shop in Peoria Heights

Losen says if the business is a legitimate one, owners will not fear a visit from inspectors. "Everything is clean and sterile, we're that way now," said Losen. "There's a lot of tattoo shops, or not shops, but people tattooing out of their homes- that's not very sterile and that will shut that down pretty quick," he continued.

The state says it's working on a check list for inspectors. If one shop is found to be in violation, there will be fines- up to $1,000 a day.

New law inspecting tattoo parlors could help boost blood donations.

A new law taking effect Sunday will require state inspection of all tattoo and body piercing parlors to ensure universal precautions are taken. The new regulation is not being put into law to cut down on the spread of diseases but to increase blood donation.

State records currently show that a minimum of 150 people are turned away from donating because of a tattoo or piercing, said Margret Vaughn, lobbyist for Illinois Coalition of Community Blood Centers.

"Ultimately, it will be up to the medical directors to decide, but other states that have statewide regulations allow donation after 30 days," said Lee Milner of the Central Illinois Community Blood Center.

This is the first time regulation will be required on a statewide level, but tattoo parlors in Macon County already undergo these inspections. The county ordinance has been around for at least five years and requires tattoo parlors to have a permit, said Charles Tribout director of environmental health for the Macon County Health Department.

Commission: Ordinance needs greater clarification.

A chiropractor’s office, though not listed now in city ordinances, might be deemed similar enough to a doctor’s office that it would be allowed in Geneva.

Resale stores, clock shops, therapeutic-massage establishments, animal-grooming businesses and tattoo parlors also are on the list of uses that could be added with the changes, called text amendments, Geneva City Planner Don Bastian said.

“This is really all about a house-cleaning issue,” Bastian said. “We just want to have clear, specific language in our zoning ordinance.”

Tattoo parlors are not allowed under the city’s current ordinance because they are not listed.

Last week, the city’s Plan Commission recommended that the City Council make changes that would detail what uses are permitted in what business districts.

Among the recommendations is allowing tattoo parlors in B-5 zoning, which is on Randall Road. The Plan Commission did not go with the staff’s suggestion that tattoo parlors be allowed in B-2 zoning on West State Street.

Governor Blagojevich signs new regulations to make tattoo and body piercing establishments safer. Law aims to increase number of potential blood donors.

Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today signed a new law putting in place new health and safety requirements for tattoo and body piercing facilities. With new requirements, Senate Bill 927 aims to increase the number of potential blood donors by allowing individuals to donate blood within a year of getting tattoos or piercings.

Senate Bill 927 makes it possible for individuals with tattoos or piercings to donate blood without a yearlong wait. According to the new law, tattoo and body piercing facilities must fulfill health and safety requirements, such as sterilization and sanitation techniques, to receive certification. The new law also requires the Illinois Department of Public Health (DPH) or a designee to inspect tattoo and body piercing parlors to ensure that they comply with state standards. In addition, facilities must renew their registration every year. Facilities can also apply for temporary registrations, valid for a maximum of 14 days, for education, trade show, or product demonstration purposes.

"Body piercing and tattoo facilities in Illinois will now be regulated," said Sen. Maloney. "This bill is key to protecting the health of Illinois' citizens and a step towards encouraging more individuals to donate blood."
