During a bad economy one business sector is thriving.

During a tough economy, many companies are seeing less traffic treading through their doors. But there are some areas of business that seem to be thriving. One of them is tattoo shops.

Channel 3 eyewitness news reporter Mary Sturgill spoke with Christian Buckingham at Synergy Body Art. "When this all hit, I actually even had a conversation with the other artists here. You know to get prepared. Cause you know, we saw the economic problems coming. We're already picking up for spring just fine and its been pretty busy the last month."

So busy in fact, they are booked several weeks out and with the warmer weather , the longer you're gonna have to wait for your tattoo. But the clients say it's worth it.

Since business is good over at Synergy, reporter Mary Sturgill came across town to a newer shop, Bleeding Cowboy Tattoo to see how their business is. Arnie Wells, one of the artists there says, "The business is staying really steady." As a matter of fact, business is so steady, they are booked almost two weeks out. But with four artists they can still take walk-ins.

And business isn't expected to slow down any time soon. In the next 3 years, studies show that 33% of all Americans will have at least one tattoo. That's up from the current approximately 25%.

Parlors are plentiful but is there enough business to go around?

In the last two years the Twin Falls tattoo industry area has experienced an infestation. "There are nine tattoo stores in Twin Falls, and we're four of them," said Fat Ratt Tattoo owner Allen Nagel. "I think we've filled the Magic Valley as full of tattoo shops as it can hold."

Customer volume is seasonal and depends on location, said Manager Shane Pilant, who operates the Fat Ratt Tattoo parlor on the corner of Washington Street and South Park Avenue. It's a purple building and hard to miss.

Pilant's store isn't the busiest location, though. Most tattoo stores rely on walk-in business. The Fat Ratt on Blue Lakes Boulevard has the highest number of walk-ins each day. "Probably 50 or better," said Stephanie Nagel, Allen's wife. "At this shop we have four artists and one piercer and a counter person. Most of them come in the late afternoon to early evening."

"There are some other good shops in town," Nagel said. "Warm Art is good. Slave Dragon is very well-known and does a good job, but there are a lot of bad ones."

Nagel said the most important thing someone considering a tattoo can do is look at an artist's portfolio carefully. "And if someone has only got two or three pictures, I wouldn't let them touch me." It is also important to look just as carefully at the store. "Look and see how clean and sterile it is," he said.

Fans "tattoo you" for Rolling Stones concert.

The Rolling Stones are performing at the Idaho Center for their “Bigger Bang” tour.

Three women say they're the among the Stones biggest fans. So much so they were excited to get the band’s logo permanently inked on their bodies.

Jana, Michele and Jamie are lifelong friends from Saskatchewan, Canada. “We are huge Rolling Stones fans and we travel to concerts together, we've traveled everywhere to see them together,” said Michele Jones.

Black Cat tattoo artist Sean Wyette inked them with the famous tongue logo of the Stones with a twist - a Canadian maple leaf and their initials JMJ over the top.
