Honolulu, Hawaii

Adjoining businesses watch and wait as big plans take shape nearby.

A tattoo shop, tiki bar and smoking accessories shop near Waikiki Beach Walk are a few of the businesses hanging on to the "old Waikiki" as the neighborhood around them undergoes redevelopment.

The Waikiki renaissance, as some have termed it, is transforming most of the neighborhood into a more upscale area, with higher-end shops and more luxury venues.

The owner of the South Pacific Tattoo Co. at 345 Saratoga Road remembers when the center was home to the Nippon Rent A Car business, a surf shop, a used-clothing store and the exotic dancers club called the Lollipop Lounge.

When he was looking to set up his tattoo business 12 years ago, Thomas "Wondo" Wondoloski said, the street was away from the hubbub of Waikiki but strategically close to the Hale Koa Hotel, where he could draw military customers.

He recalls when the Niketown block was home to Kuhio Theater, Luxury Row was a souvenir market and Lewers Street had a fruit stand. "There isn't much of the old Waikiki anymore," he said.

Whereas the highest visitor foot traffic centered around the International Market Place in the past, the Beach Walk project is starting to draw traffic further Ewa.

A tattoo like no other.

No pre-fabricated tattoo art hangs on the wall at Little Tsunami. No ready-made barbed wire to wrap around the bicep, no spider webs already spun.

“We really stay away from the street-flash shops,” said Acacia Jones, a tattoo artist who co-owns the shop. “Tattooing has moved into fine art. You’ve got to be able to do a bit of everything.”

Maori swirls, Tibetan skulls and cherry blossoms now adorn one forearm, while a chrysanthemum inked by Tsunami artist Andrea Bak sits on her shoulder. Bak has been working as a tattoo artist for 14 years and wears some of Jones’ work as well: plumeria inked into her armpits.

The shop showcases paintings by the two women and will also serve as a gallery for local artists, including Heather Cornell, whose work will be on display Nov. 19.

Marked with pride.

Once looked down upon, tattoos have gained status as art.

It seems like more and more people are getting them these days. Whether they're colored, patterned or names, tattoos seem to be popping up everywhere. Once looked at negatively in the past, tattoos are now becoming the coolest art to ink on our bodies. But why do so many people get them anyway?

Many tattoos have special meanings. Some choose to have a tattoo to remember a loved one or a place that has had an important impact on their lives. Some want tattoos that reflect their cultural heritage.

One of the most popular types of tattoo on campus are tribal designs that originated in Polynesia and surrounding islands. Because Polynesians had no writing in their culture, tattoos on their bodies told their story. Mostly men were tattooed but some women also had them. Tattoos indicated social status, genealogy and personal achievements. The ritual of getting a tattoo was considered extremely spiritual.
