Tattoo artist arrested on false imprisonment, battery charges.
Dean Johnson, 40, of Treasure Island, was arrested on Sept. 12, and charged with false imprisonment and battery after a woman complained that he had touched her inappropriately and held her against her will.
Deputies responded to the victim's complaint at Lou’s Tattoo Shop, 13325 Gulf Boulevard in Madeira Beach.
The victim went to the tattoo shop to talk to Johnson about getting some new tattoos. While in the shop, the suspect allegedly made numerous sexual advances toward the victim.
Johnson was being held in the Pinellas County Jail without bond on felony charges of lewd or lascivious battery. He also was charged with one count of false imprisonment with a bond amount of $5,000, and one charge of battery with a bond of $250.

Tattoos at Work.
A lot of people have tattoos these days. You see them at the gym, at the beach, just about everywhere.
However your boss may not want to see them. Nearly 25% of Americans between 18 and 50 have tattoos, according to a 2006 survey. In the 18 through 29-year-old demo, more than 35% of those surveyed had at least one tattoo.
Fewer than 10% of companies have established guidelines on tattoos, according to the career counseling and research firm "Vault."
Employers can hire individuals to portray the image they want and if that image doesn't include tattoos, those individuals with tattoos are just out of luck. No wonder tattoos have spawned another industry -- tattoo removal.

Artistry that spins on wheels.
Siobhan Boismier is a 27-year-old tattoo artist without any tattoos - yet. That's because she's also another kind of artist: a competitive roller skater. She said the judges just wouldn't approve of permanent ink.
But when she does get a tattoo, she plans to get a small girl that resembles her holding a palette and wearing skates. After all, everything in her world is art.
For now, the Port Richey native has to focus on her skating. Boismier wants to go to the world championships in November in Australia with her partner, Eric Hadley, but she's still struggling to recover from a knee fracture.
They placed fifth last year and need to make it into the top three for a spot on Team USA.

Tattoos draw diverse crowd.
"This shop is pretty much an urban shop, " tattoo artist Martinez "Tinez" Cook says, "from the music we play to the stuff we watch to what we talk about."
In shops like this, blacks are bringing flavor to a historically white-dominated business. And the tattoo industry is taking notice of what many peg as its fastest-growing customer base.
Blink and you might miss Body Design, tucked between a music recording studio and a pet groomer off busy Florida Avenue.
In January, the publisher of Skin & Ink magazine put out the first issue of Urban Ink: A Tattoo Magazine for People of Color.
It includes dos and don'ts for tattoos on dark skin and features on branding and the meanings behind traditional African tribal symbols.
The shop, at 10418 N Florida Ave., Tampa, is open from 1 to 10 p.m. seven days a week. The phone number is (813) 931-5701.

Jasper gets inked at Outwest Tattoos.
Outwest Tattoos in Jasper, owned and operated by international award winning artist Sue Hawkins, opened last September. She recently moved from south Florida to a large ranch in Live Oak where she raises horses she has saved from slaughter.
Hawkins’ career as a tattoo artist has spanned more than 12 years. She is the former owner and operator of Outrageous Tattoos of West Palm Beach and Twisted Heart Tattoos in Hollywood. Her talent has been recognized world wide with trophies and certificates from conventions. She has been featured in international magazines including one in Germany, Marie Clair of the United Kingdom, and tattoo magazines in the United States.
While Hawkins’ expertise is portraits, free hand, and custom work, she offers many other selections from a variety of displays and books. “Just bring in a photo,” said Hawkins. She can tattoo the portrait to your skin in exact detail.
Certified in Disease Prevention and Control, Hawkins uses disposable single use needles and hospital sterilization. She stresses the issue of cleanliness and sanitation no matter where someone goes to get a tattoo and uses disposable latex gloves with each client.
Hawkins has a new apprentice, Eddie Pike of Jasper. He is currently learning the tricks of the trade but still has much to learn. He is a former CNA and solider of the United States Army. Both Hawkins and Pike are excited about this apprenticeship.
Outwest Tattoos is located at 106 SE 1st Ave. in the back of the building and is open Monday through Saturday, from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. For more information call the shop at 792-1008.

Pierced the boys' club.
Jill Trilling, 26, makes her living getting under people's skin.
She has been a tattoo artist at 1603 Tattoo & Body Piercing Co. in Ybor City for nearly three years. Thin and green-eyed, she has been perfectly content for the last five-plus years working in what is, for the most part, "a boy's world." She knows of only one female colleague in Tampa.
Her quick wit and deliberately tall tales may throw you off at first, but give her a tattoo machine and a blank stretch of skin and she'll show you what she's really about.
Trilling graduated from Tampa Preparatory School and got her associate's degree from Hillsborough Community College. Her first job at a tattoo studio was at a place in Bradenton, answering phones and helping customers.
Then she got a job at Concrete Ink, now known as Atomic Tattoos, on N Dale Mabry Highway. That's where she learned her art.

Woman gets year in jail for body piercing 13-year-old girl's private area.
A 43-year-old Louisiana woman charged in Collier County with aggravated child abuse for piercing the pubic area of a 13-year-old girl as a way to keep her from having sex received a year in jail Tuesday and agreed to testify against the girl’s mother, who also is charged in the case.
Tammy Jane Meredith, of 4250 Blount Road, #50, Baton Rouge, La., gave the girl the body piercing against her will and at the request of the girl’s mother, who is charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse. She could face up to 30 years in state prison if convicted.
Donald Day, the attorney representing the mother, said it’s debatable whether she committed child abuse or even did anything illegal. He said it’s more of a parental rights case involving a mother who was at her wit’s end.
“If you had a 13-year-old girl who was having sex repeatedly with 30-year-old men, and you’ve tried everything you know to do and you can’t stop her, what would you do? Why wouldn’t you put a ring down there that would physically stop her?” Day said.
Meredith agreed to turn herself in Monday to begin serving her sentence. If she fails to show up, she will receive the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
The mother is set for trial Feb. 19. She has pleaded innocent.

Tattoo studio opens in Keystone Heights.
Newly-arrived, 31-year-old Keystone Heights resident Lee Wilkinson opened A Dermal Addiction Tattoo and Piercing Studio on New Years Day. He is licensed for body-piercing through the Florida Department of Health. He said he is also licensed to handle bio-medical waste. He has to renew a certificate for blood-born pathogens each year.
"When you get a tattoo," Wilkinson said, "it's an investment for life." He added that, by law, his customers must be at least 18 unless they have a notarized parental consent form, which he can supply. He will not tattoo a youngster under 16 with or without parental consent, he said. Wilkinson also said there are some types of images he will not do, and some parts of other people's bodies he will not touch in a professional setting.
There is certainly a market for Wilkenson's skills. sixteen percent of all Americans now have at least one tattoo and the number is growing. What's more, the rate of tattooed women is growing faster in women than men. Wilkinson's closest competition is in Starke and at the Waldo Flea Market.

Earlobe plugs, exotic stylings of tribal peoples worldwide, becoming more urban chic.
Over the past 10 years, piercing studios throughout the United States have seen an increase in the number of people getting plugs — the jewelry used in stretched earlobes — says Alicia Cardenas, president of the Association of Professional Piercers.
"This is an age-old practice," says Cardenas, who owns a tattoo and piercing studio in Denver. "It was introduced to our American culture kind of late, but it has been going on throughout the world for ages."
As people get their lobes enlarged, they are doing more than taking part in a popular piercing trend. They are also sharing in a tribal tradition that takes place throughout the world. With each stretch in the United States, the exotic styling of tribal African, Amazonian and South American peoples becomes more and more urban chic.

Tattoberfest sends a message that the body is the best canvas for artwork.
More than 1,000 people from all around the state showed up at Bubba’s Fin and Feather Campground for the event, which raised money for the South Levy County Fire Department.
Visitors shelled out money for a raffle — a grand prize of $3,000 worth of tattoos — and ushered their kids over to the face-painting table.
After opening White Buffalo around four years ago, Martin Bravek, the mastermind behind Tattoberfest, decided to use the ancient art form for good and raise money for the community.
The last three Tattoberfests have been so successful, Bravek now plans to expand. Under the name Inkstock, he hopes to bring similar tattoo fundraisers to other communities.

The reason for that tattoo may have faded, but it will take a laser to zap it out completely.
Somer Stanton, 24, braces herself as the licensed professional wields a tool that will modify her body. She's about to get something done that she's wanted since age 16. She's getting her tattoo removed.
A tattoo drawn by a professional artist requires about six to eight laser treatments before all evidence of a tattoo disappears, says Sara Ritacca of Chase Dermatology.
Jimbo of Body Branding Tattoo Emporium on Davis Boulevard, has had enough people ask him about removals that he has considered equipping his studio with a laser. Currently he refers patients to a dermatologist.
The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery recorde 54,866 tattoo removals in 2005, making up 6 percent of all laser surgeries. With the development of laser-removal technologies and changes in tattoo trends, dermatologists are prospering from the procedure.

Prime time ink
The over-50 crowd, some now free of lifestyle limitations, are getting their first tattoos.
Tattooing the older generation is becoming increasingly more acceptable, says Bud Yates, president of the National
Tattoo Association. He credits movie stars, athletes and rock stars for getting people interested in painted skin.
Older people tend to get tattoos that remind them of a friend, family or a meaningful relationship, and that women tend to get tattoos after their husbands die.
For the most part, people over 50 have a strong idea about what they want, before they step in the door.

Once the domain of inmates and sailors, the tattoo has evolved into high art worthy of the human canvas.
Body art, the more formal name for tattoos, is high on the self-expression chart. Many would say it's off the chart.
Many tattoo artists now have art school degrees. Tattoo shops are still illegal in Oklahoma, but elsewhere, laws and ordinances regulating the process are sure signs of mainstreaming.

Zone board hears request for tattoo, pierce studio downtown.
A zoning board meeting was held Tuesday evening to hear a use by exception request for a tattoo and piercing studio in the mixed-use district on S. Lawrence Blvd., across the street from City Hall.
Studio owner Lee Wilkinson made the request, although his studio is already under construction. Wilkinson is a licensed tattoo artist, and said he has attended numerous seminars on equipment sterilization and the prevention of blood-born diseases.
In Florida, clients must be at least 13 years of age before they can be tattooed and only with written parental consent.
Wilkinson said he did not accept clients until they are 16, and even then he is selective about who he will and will not tattoo or pierce and with which image.

City Panel OKs Residential Development, Says No to Shops.
Homeowners who live southwest of Lake Shipp Drive are not ready to quit the battle against a residential and commercial development proposal they say will ruin their quality of life.
The city's Planning Commission approved the residential plan, but deadlocked on the commercial proposal after a lengthy debate during a public hearing Monday night.
Representatives for the development company told the Planning Commission that the city staff first suggested that commercial property be included in the plan because it "makes sense" and the property would be used for convenience-type stores.
If the commercial development is allowed retail shopping, restaurants and personal services would be allowed but tattoo parlors and lounges would be banned.

Ink flows by design at Jacksonville tattoo festival.
The smell of tattoo ink is in the air at the Wyndham Riverside hotel this weekend as thousands of people from across the country meet for the third annual Jacksonville Tattoo Festival.
At least 80 booths and 400 artists are on hand for the festival. And many people pulled up their clothes, laid down in the chairs and were inked right on the spot, said Bert Simmons, who organizes the convention with his brother Santana, a tattoo artist at Oddity Ink at Jacksonville Beach. Some sat there all day to get intricate designs done.
The festival continues today and Sunday. Admission is $15.
