Artists urge common sense measures to avoid risks.
In the past 11 years, David Scott who has operated American Art Tattoo and Piercing in Milford Crossroads, has pierced hundreds of tongues. But he’s never heard of customers developing the frequent, stabbing face pains that doctors are attributing to one Italian woman’s mouth jewelry.
The Italian patient was diagnosed with a nerve disorder sometimes called “suicide disease” because of the terrible pain it causes. Doctors treated her with painkillers and stronger medication, but the episodes didn’t stop until she removed the metal stud from her pierced tongue, according to an account in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association.
Tongue piercings have also been linked to tetanus, heart infections, brain abscess, chipped teeth and receding gums. In the newly reported case, the Italian teenager’s piercing apparently irritated a nerve running along the jaw under her tongue. That nerve was connected to one of the largest nerves in the head.
Tommy Rabid, who has a tongue piercing and is owner of Agaru Tattoo in Wilmington’s Trolley Square, said men and women with certain medical conditions, such as heart valve defects, could develop serious complications from the procedure. He said anyone desiring body jewelry should make sure they choose a clean, sterile shop with experienced piercers.
