Body Piercing...

In the last few years, body piercing has become very fashionable and popular. Many people who have tattoos and piercings view them as a form of body art and as a personal statement of their individuality. Just about any place on the body can be pierced; the ear, the tongue, the eyebrow, the nose, the belly-button and the lips, to name a few.

Earlobe piercing: is the most common and familiar form of piercing done. In todays society it has become more acceptable for both men and women to have piercings. Earlobe piercing can be a single hole in one or both ears or many holes along the edge of the ear. Before you get a piercing, make sure you know if you're allergic to certain metals or not. Only non-toxic metals such as surgical steel, solid 14-karat or 18-karat gold, niobium, titanium and platinum should be used for body piercings. If you have your piercing done by someone who is trained, you are less likely to have an infection or damage your ears. A piercing gun is used for the earlobe piercing.
Aftercare: Use isopropyl alcohol on both sides of the ear and rotate the earrings at least twice a day to keep the holes from drying and scabbing. Some piercers suggest using an antibiotic ointment every night for the first week. Do not remove the earrings until the skin is healed. If you remove your earrings, newly pieced ears will close up quickly. Also during the first year, you should wear earrings most of the time to keep the holes from closing.
Healing Time: 6-8 weeks.

Tongue piercing: consists of putting a barbell through the center of the tongue. As to not damage the tongues nerve system, tongue rings are usually placed vertically at the center of the tongue.
Aftercare: Rinse your mouth with mouthwash and/or sea salt after every snack and meal. You should avoid alcohol, hot liquids and spicy foods until the area is completely healed. In the first few weeks you should avoid oral contact with other persons. Since tongues are very easy to stretch, gaging the hole after healing is an option. As with any other stretching, this should be done gradually. Tongue studs are usually large and hard and can crack, chip or fracture teeth. When eating, try to keep your tongue level in your mouth. This will help you avoid biting down on the jewelry as you chew. Ice, ice cream and ice pops can be used to reduce the swelling.
Healing Time: 4-6 weeks.

Eyebrow piercing: has become very popular since first surfacing in the 1980's. Eyebrow piercing is a purely aesthetic piercing. It draws attention to the upper face and eyes. The finished look of your eyebrow piercings will depend upon the placement of the piercing and the jewelry chosen, such as rings, spikes, or barbells.
Aftercare: Wash the eyebrow piercing twice a day with anti-bacterial soap while rotating the jewelry. You can also do sea salt soaks on the pierced area.
Healing Time: 6-8 weeks.

Nose piercing: is very attractive. It draws attention to the face's most prominent feature.
Aftercare: Wash the nose piercing twice a day with anti-bacterial soap while rotating the jewelry. You can also do sea salt soaks on the pierced area.
Healing Time: 2 weeks.

Navel/Belly Button piercing: is the most popular piercing. The sparkle of jewelry on a bare stomach proves to be very sexy.
Aftercare: Wash the navel piercing twice a day with anti-bacterial soap while spinning the jewelry. You can also do sea salt soaks on the pierced area. You must be careful to not let your clothes catch onto the piercing and tear the skin. You should also avoid clothes that create friction and moisture as they can increase the risk of infection.
Healing Time: 6-12 months.

Lip piercings: are also known as "labrets" and usually refer to a single piercing on a lower lip below the center, about half-way between the edge of the lower lip and the top of the chin. Labrets can also be done in pairs. Lower pairs are sometimes known as "lowbrets".
Aftercare: Rinse your mouth with mouthwash after every meal. In addition sea salt soaks will help the healing. Ice, ice cream and ice pops can be used to reduce the swelling.
Healing Time: 6-8 weeks.
